Nick Jones a vice president of Gartner: UC is indeed a scam. Our debate entitled “Unified communications is the biggest scam since Ponzi” was massively entertaining using the traditional English debating strategy of reasoned argument, followed by reasoned counter-argument, followed by personal abuse. Underhand tactics were used by both sides. Steve Blood tried to distract me by talking on his mobile while I was presenting, and I retaliated by pouring water on his head. Don’t let anyone tell you that Gartner presentations are staid and boring! I’m claiming it as a victory because at the start only 20 percent of the audience were on my side and by the end it was closer to 50 percent

I can certainly agree with you on three areas:
- consumer software is currently innovating faster than enterprise software
- The likes of MS and Cisco are attempting to repeat age old practises of driving customers into a one way alley
- Vendors who use business cases based on micro productivity as a primary means of justification for IT implementation should be viewed with scorn
For the next few years UC will be a battleground between mega-vendors like Microsoft and Cisco who want to suck you in to their technological whirlpool where you’ll be trapped paying license fees for a decade.
